How to Get Rid of a Fat Neck

A fat neck is a common concern for many people looking for a more youthful, slimmer and defined neckline.  Neck fat can sometimes affect our self-confidence.

In this article we will cover the many effective methods to change a fatty neck, ranging from surgical procedures like liposuction and neck lift to non-invasive treatments such as Coolsculpting.

Liposuction for the neck

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas, including a fat neck. It involves making small incisions and using a thin tube, called a cannula, to suction out unwanted fat cells. Liposuction is effective for individuals with stubborn neck fat that, despite diet and exercise, has not helped. A more defined and less invasive method is micro liposuction to the neck.

Micro Liposuction: more precise and minimally invasive

Micro liposuction, also known as micro lipo, is a specialised technique that uses smaller cannulas to target and remove small pockets of fat. This minimally invasive procedure works well for individuals with localised neck fat, allowing precise contouring and minimal scarring. Our Plastic Surgeon Mr David Gateley is highly experienced in micro lipo to the neck, with many years of specialised experience and can create a defined neck and jawline.

Neck Lift: to address sagging skin and fat on the neck

A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to address not only excess fat but also sagging skin and muscle laxity in the neck area. It involves making incisions behind the ears or under the chin, through which the surgeon can tighten the underlying muscles, remove excess fat by micro liposuction, and reposition the skin for a smoother, more rejuvenated appearance. Both the neck lift procedure and micro liposuction to the neck are carried out in the same operation. It is a highly successful operation that can refresh your face and the sculptured neck does also give the appearance of looking slimmer.

Coolsculpting for a fat neck: fat freezing to the neck

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment to target stubborn fat pockets. It can treat the neck area. By using the controlled cooling technology, it freezes and breaks down fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body. This procedure is mostly safe but does carry some risks. It is FDA-approved and requires minimal downtime. Results take about 12-16 weeks to show. The effects are not as dramatic or as defined as neck liposuction or a neck lift. It is now recommended to have two sets of CoolSculpting to achieve optimal results.

Vaser Liposuction for a fat neck: minimally invasive

Vaser liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses ultrasound technology to break down and remove excess fat. Both Vaser liposuction and micro liposuction are known for their ability to sculpt the neck and other areas of the body with more precision compared to traditional liposuction techniques and compared to CoolSculpting.

Other considerations: Lower facelift and Jowl lift

Whilst many patients at Kensington Medical opt for micro liposuction to the jaw and neck to achieve a slimmer neck and more defined jaw line, we do have patients who decide that they also want to have a lower facelift or jowl lift. This procedure can help address sagging jowls, help to better define the jawline and can address sag in the lower face.  All the above options can be discussed in consultation with your surgeon.

Find out more in a personal Consultation: Are you suitable?

Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it is crucial to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon. At your consultation, we will discuss what you want to achieve and find out about any timelines you have, such as a special event.  Your surgeon will show you before and after results of past patients who have had neck lipo, and if you are interested, they can also show you before and after photos of a neck lift or lower face and jowl lift. They will fully discuss what happens, recovery and the risks so you feel 100% confident in your choice. They will then recommend the most suitable treatment based on what you want to achieve. At Kensington Medical, micro liposuction to the neck is our speciality; in fact, we only focus on the face.
