Why is it important to find the best facelift surgeon?

A facelift is a corrective surgery to create a more youthful appearance in your face. The operation aims to correct the sagging or creasing of skin on or around the cheek and jawline areas. It can also help to remove the nasolabial folds or nose to mouth lines.

Many people’s perceptions of facelifts are influenced by the media covering negative outcomes of facelift surgeries. Although this is not as common as might be suggested, it does still happen. This is why it is important to do thorough research before choosing a surgeon, to ensure they have the right qualifications and experience and will give you a great result.

Factors to consider when choosing the best facelift surgeon

What should you look out for when choosing a facelift surgeon that is best for you? This can come down to several factors:

  • Ask the surgeon what they specialise in. A surgeon specialising in facial cosmetic surgery will be much better equipped to give you a great result as they have the technical skills and experience required.
  • Ask for how many years the surgeon has been operating. A surgeon with many years of experience will be better suited to providing you with the best result.
  • Ask how many facelifts they have performed. A surgeon who has performed many facelifts is more likely to be able to tailor the operation to suit your unique facial features and structure.
  • Check that they are on the General Medical Council's (GMC) Specialist Register for the relevant speciality (for facial specialists, this could be Plastics or Otolaryngology).
  • Check that they are members of professional organisations such as BAPRAS (The British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons) or BAAPS (The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons).
  • Ask to see their before and after photographs for the procedure you are considering. This will enable you to ascertain their artistic ability to contour and tailor a facelift to your own unique facial features and structure.
  • An expert and experienced facial surgeon will be able to explain why they feel facelift operations may or may not be suitable for your facial structure.
  • The reputation of the hospital where your surgeon operates should help guide your choice of surgeon as a hospital with a good reputation will only accept surgeons of a similar standing.
  • Lastly, it is crucial that you find a surgeon, who listens to your needs as this will enhance your confidence that your newfound look will match your expectations.
